The Great Protector
The Great Protector — Jay Bryant Ward
There is a stillness in this figure that commands attention before a single detail is absorbed. The Great Protector is a richly painted portrait of a Native American elder rendered in the tradition of the great figurative Western artists — expressive, respectful, and deeply human.
The elder stands with quiet authority, dressed in traditional regalia: a full feathered headdress with a turquoise and red beaded headband, braided hair adorned with feathers, a layered bone and bead breastplate, and a buckskin tunic. Artist Jay Bryant Ward's bold, painterly brushwork brings each element to life with a sense of weight and presence, set against a warm, glowing ochre background that feels both timeless and intimate.
This is portrait art that asks you to pause — to consider the life, the history, and the dignity held within a single gaze. A fitting addition to Western art collections, lodge interiors, offices, and gallery walls where meaningful figurative work is valued.
